Grace “Pearl” Smith, 99, of Unionville, died on Friday, Dec. 15, 2006. She was a resident of the Putnam County Care Center at the time where she had lived for 13 years.
Nrs, Smith was born March 21, 1907 in Lucerne, the daughter of George A. and Ada Grace Bruce Guymon who preceded her in death. She spent most of her early years on her parent’s farm. She later attended school at the Hill school and Lucerne High School, where she played violin in the school orchestra and met her future husband, Ted Smith.
After high school, Pearl attended college in Kirksville and Columbia. She taught school in Putnam County for two years. On Aug. 20, 1927 she married Ted Smith who preceded her in death in September of 1990. She then quit teaching in order to stay home, rear their four children and help Ted on the farm.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed her garden and flowers, but most of all she enjoyed her family. She and her husband were active members of West Liberty Baptist Church. They liked to help young people. She was a 4-H leader and taught sewing to all the girls in the neighborhood. She was once named the 4-H leader of the year. She was respected and loved by all her friends and family.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Nada Galloway of Trenton and Marjorie Bartmess of Pollock; one son, Merlin Smith of Osage, KS; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Denisar of Champaign, IL. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents and husband, Pearl was also preceded in death by a daughter, June Smith.
Funeral services for Pearl Smith were held on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Playle & Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville. Burial was in the West Liberty Cemetery.
