Area Teams In Action Over The Weekend

Area high school basketball teams were in action over the weekend.
The Newtown-Harris boys and girls played host to a pair of games in the Ketcham Community Center on Friday night. The Grundy R-5 boys and girls were at Winston.

Newtown-Harris
The Lady Tigers dominated North Daviess, 75-29, while the Newtown-Harris boys scored a nice win over Cameron’s junior varsity, 62-34.
The Newtown-Harris full-court and three quarter-court pressure forced the North Daviess girls into several first half mistakes. The Lady Tigers turned those mistakes into a big lead.
N-H led at the end of the first quarter, 24-8. The game was all but over at halftime as the Lady Tigers went into the break with a 48-13 lead. The Lady Tigers eased off their pressure in the second half and went on to beat North Daviess by 46 points.
Krista Abernathy led the way for Newtown-Harris with 20 points. Kali Daum chipped in with 12 points.
The Lady Tigers improve to 5-3 overall while the Lady Knights fall to 0-6.
The Newtown-Harris boys never had a breakout quarter, but did steadily pull away from Cameron’s junior varsity. Newtown-Harris outscored the Dragons at the end of the first quarter, 16-8. The Tigers topped Cameron by a score of 12-4 in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 30-12 lead. The Tigers outscored Cameron in the second half, 32-22.
Andy Busick scored 17 points and Brandon Coin scored 12 points. Coin also had nine rebounds. Canaan Fairley scored nine points and had three assists and two steals. K.J. Cool finished with only two points, but chipped in with six assists, three steals and two blocks.
The Tigers improve to 7-1 overall.
The Newtown-Harris teams will return to action over the holiday break in the NCMC Holiday Shootout. The Lady Tigers will open the shootout on Thursday, Dec. 28 against Gilman City at 10 a.m. The boys will play Gilman City at 11:30 a.m. Both contests will be played in the Ketcham Community Center.
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 boys improved to 2-0 in HDC Conference play with a convincing win over Winston, 57-25. The Lady Panthers are still looking for their first win, however, after falling to Winston, 65-12.
The boys contest was close at the end of the first quarter as R-5 led 15-11.The Panthers broke the game open in the second quarter by outscoring Winston, 27-4. The Panthers outscored Winston in the second half, 15-10.
Kyle Larson continued to rack up the the points with a game-high 28. The Panthers are playing outstanding team ball. Grundy R-5 finished with more than 10 assists on Friday night. The starters combined for 13 assists. Logan Jackson led the way with five assists. He also had 16 points, six rebound and six steals.
Colby Searcy had four assists, four steals and four points. Tyler Jackson had four assists and three steals. Rob Crawford added eight points.
The Grundy R-5 boys improve to 7-2 overall and will host Green City on Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers fell behind early, 19-4, and at halftime trailed, 37-4. The score continued in favor of Winston in the third quarter as they outscored Grundy R-5, 20-7. The Lady Panthers lost the contest by 53 points.
Heather Vivone had seven points, seven rebounds and two steals for Grundy R-5. Kala Smith had five points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.
The Lady Panthers fall to 0-8. They host Green City on Tuesday.
