Tuesday night features a mixture of blowouts and nail-biters for area high school basketball teams.
The Grundy R-5 boys escaped Hale with a two-point win while the Lady Panthers dropped their seventh game. The Newtown-Harris boys and girls ran Cainsville out of the gym and the North Mercer boys handled Milan. The Gilman City girls lost by eight points to Gallatin while the Hawks could not overcome a poor first half against the Bulldogs.
Grundy R-5 Boys 76,
Hale Boys 74
It took two overtimes to get a winner in the boys’ contest. The Panthers, led by another big night from senior Kyle Larson, outlasted Hale by two points.
Larson scored 39 points and had four rebounds assists and three steals for Grundy R-5. Colby Searcy and Logan Jackson also scored in double digits with 16 and 12 points respectfully. Jackson finished with a well-rounded game, turning in his second triple-double of the year. He added 14 rebounds and 13 assists to his 12 points.
Searcy also chipped in five rebounds and three steals. Nick Lentz scored six points. Kameron Garber hit nine three-pointers to pace Hale and finished with 31 points.
The Panthers are 6-2 overall and will be at Winston on Friday.
Hale Girls 62,
Grundy R-5 Girls 24
A poor start in both the first half and second half proved too much for the Lady Panthers. Hale outscored the Lady Panthers 22-2 in the first quarter and 21-4 in the fourth quarter.
Heather Vivone had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Kala Smith had 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Panthers fall to 0-7 overall and will be at Winston on Friday night.
Newtown-Harris Boys 84,
Cainsville Boys 11
The boys game was over before the end of the first quarter, with the Tigers outscoring Cainsville by 34 points in the first quarter.
Four Tigers scored in double digits and all 11 players scored. Tyler Busick, K.J. Cool and Andy Busick each scored 12 points. Matt Tovrea chipped in with 11 points. Justin Ralls had three blocks. Cool and Canaan Fairley led the team with five assists each. Brandon Coin pulled down six rebounds to lead the Tigers.
Newtown is 6-1 and improves to 2-0 in the HDC. The Tigers will play the Cameron junior varsity on Friday in the Ketcham Community Center.
Newtown-Harris Girls 53,
Cainsville Girls 28
The Lady Tigers steadily pulled away from Cainsville throughout the contest. Newtown-Harris led by 15 at halftime and then outscored the Redettes by 10 points in the second half.
Jessica Huffman led the way for Newtown-Harris with 14 points and four steals. Krista Abernathy had 11 points. Deanna Peck had five assists and Katie Mino led the team in rebounding with six.
The Lady Tigers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the HDC. Newtown-Harris host the North Daviess girls in the KCC on Friday.
Gallatin Girls 38,
Gilman City Girls 30
The Lady Hawks led by five at the end of the first quarter, but Gallatin came back and at halftime the score was tied, 21-21.
Ashley Owens and Keisha Bundy combined for 22 of Gallatin’s 38 points. Monica Wilson paced Gilman City with 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get Gilman City’s leading scorer, Kyle Payne, in foul trouble and limited her to eight points.
The Gilman City record was unavailable. The Lady Hawks are at Pattonsburg on Friday.
Gallatin Boys 70,
Gilman City Boys 43
Nic Burrell led the Bulldogs to a convincing win on Tuesday night. Burrell scored 22 points as Gallatin dominated the first half, outscoring Gilman City 47-23.
Bryant Elder led Gilman City with 13 points.
The Hawks’ record was not available. They will travel to Pattonsburg on Friday.
Mercer Girls 43,
Milan Girls 39
The fourth quarter was the difference for the Mercer girls, who trailed 35-25 at the end of three periods of play.
An 18-4 run gave Mercer the win. Of the 18 scored, 11 came from the game’s leading scorer, Toni Brundage, who finished the contest with 23 points. Mandy Easton had 10 rebounds for Mercer, who is 1-3 overall.
Milan was led by Whitley Schnelle with 11 points.
Mercer Boys 68,
Milan Boys 33
The Mercer boys had little trouble with Milan, jumping out to a 38-14 lead at halftime. The Cardinals then outscored Milan in the second half, 30-19, to get the win.
Austin Hague and Bo Stark each scored 18 for the Cardinals, who are 4-0. Tim Bomgardner added nine points.
Milan was led by Bryce Richardson with 10.
The Milan boys and girls will be at Meadville on Friday.
