Fred Lowell Holt, an 80-year-old resident of Harris, died on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006 at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today (Monday, Dec. 11, 2006) at the Newtown Christian Church. Danny Busick and the Rev. Denny Daum officiated. Burial was in the Brantley Cemetery, south of Princeton, under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Princeton.
Mr. Holt was born on June 23, 1926 in Mercer County, the son of Fred and Letha Lowell Collings Holt. He was raised in the Newtown community and graduated in 1943 from Newtown High School. He moved to Kansas City after graduation and worked until 1944, when he joined the U.S. Navy. He was married on June 16, 1945 in Troy, KS to Clarice Dale Michael, who survives of the home near Harris. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in March 1946, the couple moved to the Newtown community, where he engaged in farming for 60 years. He also worked for the Missouri Weight and Measurement Department for eight years.
He was a member of the Newtown Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge. As a World War II veteran, he served in Africa and received the World War II Victory Medal. He also served in the Princeton R-5 Board of Education and along with Bob Robinson, Forest Davis and O.R. “Buddy” Reed, founded the Newtown Saddle Club in 1960.
He enjoyed horses, his cattle, his work, fishing, golfing, playing pool, playing cards and flying his plane. He also enjoyed winters in Texas, visiting with friends and making new friends of all ages.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Wood Holt and his wife, Bonnie, of Princeton, Winn Holt and his wife, Mary Jane, of Harris, Jim Holt and his wife, Shelly, of Harris, Ann Holt Dunavin and her husband, Terry, of Tonganoxie, KS and Frank Holt and his wife, Linda, of Harris; a sister-in-law, Pat Holt of Aurora, CO; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Kenneth Holt; a nephew, Steven Holt; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clio “Pete” and Margaret Niccum Michael.
The family suggests memorials to the Newtown Saddle Club or the Putnam County Memorial Hospital. They can be mailed to the funeral home at PO Box 316, Princeton, MO 64673.
