The Trenton High School basketball teams hit a bump in the road over the weekend in the Gallatin Tournament.
THS Basketball In Gallatin Tournament
The Lady Bulldogs, slowed by illness, lost on Friday night, but recovered to win third place on Saturday. The THS boys lost a pair of games over the weekend, including a double-digit lead on Friday night.
THS Boys
Things got off to a good start on Friday night against South Harrison. An early 11-point lead was not enough as South Harrison came back to beat THS, 48-37. The Bulldogs lost to Newtown-Harris on Saturday in the third-place game, 52-44.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter on Friday, but a couple of extended scoring droughts by THS ate that lead away. Heading into halftime Trenton led, 18-15.
“We got off to a good start,” Head Coach Lyle Best said. “I thought our defense caused them some problems and I thought we did a nice job of rebounding.”
With about 2:30 remaining in the first quarter, Trenton’s offense sputtered as the ‘Dogs went nearly eight minutes without scoring. During that stretch, THS had five turnovers and missed five straight shots.
The Bulldogs scored just four points in the second quarter and at halftime, Trenton’s lead was just three points. Things continued to come apart for Trenton in the third quarter and midway through the period South Harrison took the lead, then pulled away from the Bulldogs.
“After halftime, South Harrison adjusted to our defense,” Best said. “Offensively, we have to find a way to get more people involved.”
The Bulldogs committed several fouls in the fourth quarter and had a player receive a technical foul. South Harrison outscored THS by 11 points.
“I am upset that we lost, but I am more disappointed in the way the boys conducted themselves at the end of the game,” Best said. “That is not the way our team acts and I don’t want people to think that is acceptable behavior.”
Derek Miller led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Kyle Hoyt had six points and Josh Lisle scored five points.
Jacob Bottcher led the way for South Harrison with 12 points, including eight second half points. Brad Madison also scored eight points in the second half and finished with 10 total points.
The Bulldogs ran into a hot shooting Newtown-Harris Tigers team on Saturday. The Tigers shot nearly 50 percent from both the two- and three-point range. THS, on the other hand, shot only 30 percent from the floor.
“Newtown shot the ball very well the entire game,” Best said. “We did not take care of the ball in the first half, but we got better as the game went on.”
The Tigers led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers pushed their lead to 31-15 in the second period. In the third quarter the Bulldogs were outscored by one point. THS nearly equaled their scoring output for the entire game in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 of their 44 points.
Hoyt led THS with 13 points. Logan Epperson had eight points and Tyler Brinkley scored five points. De’Andre Vandevender and T.J. Ireland both had four points. Miller and Logan Wyant each added three points.
Andy Busick led the Tigers with 17 points, four assists and two steals. K.J. Cool had six points, two assists, two steals and one block. Brandon Coin had five rebounds and four blocks. Tyler Busick had 10 points.
The Tigers improve to 3-1 overall while THS falls to 2-2.
Newtown-Harris travels to Seymour, IA on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are at Hamilton on Tuesday.
THS Girls
The THS Lady Bulldogs were forced to play Friday night’s semifinal game without point guard Trisha Ireland, who missed the game with illness. and the Lady Bulldogs would miss her against Gallatin’s full-court pressure defense. Gallatin took advantage of Ireland’s absence by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs in the first quarter, 16-6.
“Gallatin played very well,” Head Coach Kris Ockenfels said. “They gave us problems with their quickness and athleticism.”
Gallatin outscored THS by two points in the second quarter and at halftime Trenton trailed, 25-13. Gallatin continued to cause Trenton problems in the second half. The Red and Black outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 24-19, to close out the victory.
“I thought we played with great effort, but we did not execute well at all,” Ockenfels said. “Playing without Trisha was a definite disadvantage, but Liz Hoffman did a nice job of filling in at the last moment.”
Aimee Gutshall led Trenton with 10 points. Courtney Ray led Gallatin with 18 points and Wren Tolen had 11 points.
The Lady Bulldogs had to come back in the third-place game to beat Maysville. THS turned the ball over 30 times and still found a way to get the win.
Trenton outscored the Lady Wolverines by 12 points in the fourth quarter to get the 53-50 win. THS went into the fourth quarter trailing, 39-30.
“We committed 30 turnovers and still found a way to win. That doesn’t happen much in this game,” Ockenfels said. “We were down by nine after the third quarter, but the girls kept playing hard and we finally got some shots to fall.”
Senior Brittany Lynch broke the 50-50 tie with a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Bulldogs the win. Trenton trailed by one at the end of the first quarter and at halftime was down, 25-24.
“We have a lot to work on,” Ockenfels said. “But getting the third-place trophy was good for our group, something positive to start the year.”
Kari Shiflett led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points and Lynch finished with 14 points.
Jenni Webber had 16 points and Andi Gaiser added 15 points for Maysville.
The Lady Bulldogs improve to 3-1 and will travel to Hamilton on Tuesday.
