William Tellison “Bill” Barton III, a 73-year-old resident of Hartsburg, died on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 at the Capital Region Medical Center. He was a former Trenton resident.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 at the Buescher Memorial Home in Jefferson City. Rev. Donald Carter and Rev. Brendan Doyle will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Riverview Cemetery.
A family visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Barton was born on Dec. 13, 1932 in Jefferson City, the son of Judge William Tellison Barton II and Olean A. Lotton Barton. He was a graduate of Jefferson City High School and received his bachelor of science degree in secondary education in 1957 and his master of arts degree in school administration in 1962 from Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman State University) in Kirksville. He had been involved for 33 years in public education as a teacher or administrator. He retired from public school education in 1986. He then served as director of the Green Hills Head Start program in north Missouri for 15 years, retiring from that position in 1998. He became licensed in the early 1990s as a Child Development Associate Examiner throughout the U.S. Head Start Region, continuing until 2002.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1954. He enjoyed coaching softball, basketball and volleyball and started the women’s basketball program at Trenton Junior College.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the Missouri State Teachers Association and the Missouri Administrators Association. He was active in some professional organizations, having held offices in the Missouri Head Start Organization out of Kansas City and the Central U.S. Head Start Organization for Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.
He became a licensed amateur ham radio operator and was a member of the Missouri Amateur Ham Radio Organization. He kept busy after his retirement by working part-time at the Kansas City Airport, driving cars for the Sut Hill and Barnes-Baker automobile dealerships, being a part-time security guard at Modine in Jefferson City and for the last few years was a part-time worker at the Eagle Knoll Golf Course in Hartsburg.
He enjoyed all sports and coached and cheered his children and grandchildren from the stands. He enjoyed using metal detectors to search for old coins and was an avid hunter reader, golfer and viewer of the History and National Geographic TV channels.
He was married on Sept. 1, 1957 in Winigan to Joy Lea Martin, who survives of home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, William T. Barton IV and his wife, Paula, of Savage, MN, Thayne L. Barton and his wife, DeAnn, of Jefferson City and Kay Lea Foster and her husband, Russel, of Jefferson City; one brother, Gary L. Barton of St. Maries, ID; and eight grandchildren, Michelle Aucion and her husband, Mike, Chris Barton, Kyle Wilde, Drew Wilde, Megan Foster, Taylor Barton, Taryne Barton and Alex Barton.
Memorials are suggested to Camp Wonderland or the St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
