During a meeting on Tuesday, the board voted to approve the request, which would let the two entities move forward with plans for Christmas-related activities at that site. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Terri Hender-son said the group is having a 10-foot white pine planted in an area of Eastside Park, which will be lighted during ceremonies on Dec. 2. Mrs. Henderson said the tree would be permanently located at that site and it is the plan to have all future Christmas lighting ceremonies in that area.
Eastside Park was chosen because several Christmas-related activities are being held by businesses in that area, many of which plan to stay open late for persons to do their holiday shopping. Mrs. Henderson said the chamber was looking at activities that would encourage people to stay in Trenton and shop locally and that the Ministerial Alliance had approached the chamber about the tree lighting effort. As a result, the Christmas lighting program was developed.
In approving the request, the board decided to allow holiday gatherings instead of specifically targeting Christmas, noting that the two groups may want to have other holiday events there during the year. The board said it would look at how those events go and then may consider expanding the motion to include other city park areas in the future.
In other business, the board discussed adding the superintendent to the list of individuals allowed to call special meetings as outlined in the by-laws. The change will be brought back to the full park board for consideration at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
