Tri-County Gets Interim Superintendent

An interim superintendent was named, health insurance was discussed and board filing dates were set during meetings on Monday night of the Tri-County, Grundy R-5 and Laredo R-7 boards of education met.

Tri-County R-7
Former Trenton R-9 and Grundy R-5 superintendent Harry Wheeler was hired by the Tri-County R-7 Board of Education to serve as interim superintendent during its meeting at Jamesport.
According to information provided by the school, Wheeler will serve until the end of the school year. He will be paid $25,000. He replaces Mary Kish, who is no longer with the school district.
Filing dates for the April board election were set for Dec. 12 through Jan. 16. Persons can file for positions on the board from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for Dec. 21, when filing can be done until 12:45 p.m. The office will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 2. The terms of Russell Hopkins and Tim Wahlers expire.
The board gave the go-ahead to proceed with the pre-school building, which will be placed on the west side of the elementary school. The school calendar was amended to reflect an early out at 12:45 p.m. on Dec. 21.
The board approved the Annual Secretary of the Board Report and the Annual Performance Report. It was decided to have the Jamesport Community Association rent buildings and pay custodians when using the school facilities. Also approved was a motion to advertise for a special education aide as well as a recommendation from building principal’s to select an alternate school
The board tabled a recommendation to appoint a salary committee until individuals are contacted to serve.
An executive session was held for personnel, with the announcement being the employment of Wheeler. The next board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
Grundy R-5
Information was presented on the possible formation of a health insurance cooperative during the Grundy R-5 meeting.
According to Superintendent Rob Deaver, the plan calls for the R-5 District to join with several other northwest school districts, beginning with the 2007-2008 school year. The school districts are currently looking and the possibilities and feasibility of such a cooperative.
Building principals Randy Huffman and Lisa Fairley presented the board with updates to the Safety/Crisis Management Plans, which were approved by the board. The candidate filing dates for the April election were set for Dec. 12 through Jan. 16 during normal business hours. The three-year positions of Mike Herrold and Melody Shipley will be expiring.
Huffman reported that enrollment for grades 7 through 12 was 77 students and that attendance for the month of October was 97.2 percent. He recognized the October Students of the Month as well as the high school academic bowl all-conference members. He reviewed activities at the high school as well as upcoming events.
Mrs. Fairley noted enrollment in grades kindergarten through 6 was 97 students and that the attendance rate was 94.2 percent. She said 33 students achieved perfect attendance during October and that 35 students received “proficient” and 10 students received “advanced” on the spring MAP tests, Various activities and upcoming events were also reviewed.
Reports were heard from the first grade, kindergarten and music instructors on their programs. Approval was given to program evaluations for homeless/immigrant services and facilities and grounds.
School will be dismissed early on Friday, Nov. 17 for a teacher in-service. The elementary building will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. and the high school will be dismissed at 11:40 a.m.
School will also not be in session Wednesday, Nov. 22 through Friday, Nov 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
An executive session was held for personnel, however, no announcement was made.
The next meeting will be on Monday, Dec. 11, with a special meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m.
Laredo R-7
The Laredo R-7 Board set filing dates during its meeting.
According to information from Principal Jean Dustman, the April election filing dates were set for Dec. 12 to Jan. 16 during regular business hours. The school office will be closed at 1 p.m. on Dec. 20 until 8 a.m. on Jan. 3. The three-year terms of Shane Larson and Mona Loyd and the one-year unexpired term of Phil Fox expire.
The board agreed to allow students and staff to attend a Christmas movie in December. It was also decided to put an advertisement in the newspaper for bids on a 1989 International bus. A minimum bid requirement of $600 was set.
An executive session was held with no announcement made.
The next board meeting will be held on Monday, Dec. 11.
