According to Presiding Commissioner Kenny Roberts, the commission met with Johne Chapman and Lisa Gannon of Trickel Construction this morning, with Chapman telling commissioners that he has received actual quotes for construction that allow him to safely say the project will come in at $4 million. That amount would include Trickel’s fee of $100,000 for serving as construction manager and another $86,000 for reimbursables to the company. The county road and bridge crew will be doing the rough excavation of the basement after core samples are taken and surveying is complete and may assist with other jobs on the project as needed. Roberts said the $4 million amount is about $500,000 more than what the commission had told voters they thought it would be when the sales tax was approved. The project has been bid twice before, with the low bid in March coming from Bonhert Construction of Kansas City for $5,295,000, and the low bid from the July bid process coming from Irvinbilt of Chillicothe for $4,849,000. Following the July bid, the commission decided to go with the construction manager-type process in hopes that the bids would be less.
Roberts said the formal bidding process has now begun and bids will be opened on Wednesday, Nov. 22. A formal groundbreaking is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the construction site, located just west of the courthouse. All members of the law enforcement committee and the public are invited to attend.
