Garland E. “Doc” Coon, an 82-year-old resident of Spickard, died on Saturday morning, Oct. 28, 2006 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov.1, 2006 at the Wise and Slater Funeral Chapel in Spickard. Rev. Guy Olin Thomas will officiate with burial following military graveside services by the Joseph L. Norton VFW Post No. 919 at the Spickard Masonic Cemetery at Spickard
A family visitation will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
Mr Coon was born on Jan. 1, 1924 at Spickard, the son of Earl and Nellie McLaughlin Coon. He attended Pilot Knob rural schools, north of Spickard. He was a lifelong resident of the Spickard area. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was also a retired farmer. He was a member of the Modena Baptist Church at Modena.
He was married on July 3, 1943 in Trenton to Mary F. Stamper, who survives of Trenton.
He is also survived by one daughter, Mary Louise Tracy and her husband, Steve, of Trenton; one son, Jerry Coon and his wife, Sue, of Milan; two sisters, Pauline Vandevender and her husband, Gilbert, of Trenton, and Maxine Williams of Louisville, KY; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Carl Coon, Woodrow Coon, Frank Coon and an infant brother, Roy Olin Coon; and one son, Jim Coon.
Memorials are suggested to the Spickard Masonic Cemetery. They may be left at the Wise and Slater Funeral Chapel at Spickard.
