Former Grundy County Commissioner Billy B. Herrin, an 81-year-old resident of Trenton, died on Saturday morning, Oct. 14, 2006, at the home of his sister-in-law in Gladstone, where he had been visiting for the weekend.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006 at the Resthaven Mortuary, north of Trenton. A scheduled family visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the mortuary. The body will be cremated after the services and inurement of the ashes will be at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, north of Trenton, at a later date.
Mr. Herrin was born on Jan. 1, 1925 near Melbourne, the son of William Stone and Maude Callie Ratliff Herrin. He was raised in the Melbourne and Brimson communities. He was married on Aug. 25, 1948 at Van Buren, AR to Mary Grimes, who survives of the home at 310 SE Lotus Lane near Trenton. They lived and farmed all their married life in the Brimson area, until they moved to a farm southwest of Trenton. In addition to farming, Mr. Herring served on the Grundy County Commission for four years and had been employed by Landis Oil, operating the Trenton Bulk Plant for several years.
He was a member of the Melbourne Baptist Church, the Major Dale Stepp American Legion Post No. 31, the Joseph L. Norton VFW Post No. 919 and the Jamesport Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Callie, now Mrs. R.P. Hill of Trenton; a son, Rick Herrin of Platte City; a sister, Helen Hill of Herrin, IL; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wayne Herrin; a sister, Martha Hughes; and a half-sister, Eulah Craig.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Grundy County Food Pantry or the Disabled Veterans of America. They may be left at or mailed to the Resthaven Mortuary at PO Box 587, Trenton, MO 64683.
