Editor’s Note: Each week, the Republican-Times will review a specific position on the all-time THS Football Team that was included as part of the 2006 fall sports special section. Readers are asked to nominate individuals they think should also be included on that list. Readers will also be able to vote on those nominees in a poll appearing on the Republican-Times website (www.republican-times.com). A review of the suggestions will be published as part of the THS weekly football preview on Thursdays.
1990 Offense Line Picked As Best By The Readers
by Greg Dalrymple, R-T Sports Editor
Things came right down to the wire on Wednesday afternoon. Early voting gave the edge to the 1990 offensive line, but a strong showing by the 2002 team late made the voting close. Before we get to the winner, let’s run down those who didn’t make the grade. In all, we received 83 votes this week.
The 1946 unbeaten team and the 1978 team both came up empty as voters showed neither team any love as they received no votes. Trenton’s 1984 MEC champions were nearly blanked as they received just one vote.
The 2004 unit and 1940 unit each had two votes. Finishing with five votes each were the 1962 and 1979 units. The unbeaten unit in ‘66 earned seven total votes.
The team of 2000 had a respectable showing with nine votes and the 1986 unit finished with 10 votes. But the vote came down to the final minutes. The ‘02 unit picked up four votes in the final two hours of voting, but it wasn’t quite enough. The ‘02 unit feature an all senior group that included Scott Sharp, Philip Elliott, Seth Cox (who went on to play at Missouri Western University), David Sager, Eric Hoffman, Zach Anderson and Brady West. As a unit they received 22 total votes.
The Readers’ All-Time offensive line is the 1990 unit with 25 votes. Anchoring that group was right tackle Chris Sharp, a 280-pound senior, who went on to play football at Pittsburg State. Next to him was right guard Kenny Robbins, a 220-pound senior who continued his college career at Truman state University. At center was Craig Sterling, a 235-pound senior. On the left side at guard was Shane Holloway, 175-pound senior and left tackle Brandon Spencer, 240 pound junior. The tight end was Aaron Huffstutter, a 150-pound senior.
