Mabel “Jean” King Altes, an 83-year-old resident of Chillicothe, died on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006 at the Morningside Center in Chillicothe.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006 at the Soul’s Harbor Church of God in Chillicothe. Burial will be in the Wheeling Cemetery.
A family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 o’clock tonight (Monday, Oct. 9, 2006) at the Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe, where general visitation is under way.
Mrs. Altes was born on Dec. 17, 1922 in Eversonville, the daughter of Andrew and Evelyn Stoddard Hammack. She was married on July 8, 1943 to Charles Russell King, who preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1968. She was married in Chillicothe on Sept. 24, 1971 to Royald Altes, who preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1988.
She worked as a hairdresser in Chillicothe for many years. She was a 50-year member of the First Assembly of God Church in Chillicothe, transferring her membership to the Soul’s Harbor Church of God in Chillicothe in 2002. She was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing the piano at church and at nursing homes. She also devoted time providing transportation for friends and caring for others in need.
She is survived by two daughters, Judi Hundley and her husband, Ottis, of Chillicothe, and Patty Altes and her husband, Gary, of Chillicothe; one son, Ron King of Chillicothe; two step-sons, Dean Altes of Grand Junction, CO and Don Altes and his wife, Joyce, of Trenton; two step-daughters, Marilyn Silkwood and her husband, Mark, of Trenton and Ruth Altes of Excelsior Springs; a sister-in-law,Trudy Hammack of Rolla; five grandchildren, Chad Altes and his wife, Kristen of Prairie Village, KS, Josh King of Chillicothe, Heather Hundley of Chillicothe and Melissa and Ashlee King of Kansas City; one great-granddaughter, Heaven Leann Taylor; 10 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Teresa Hammack of Rolla; and one nephew, Rodney Hammack of Salem.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles Russell King II; one brother, Calvin Hammack; and one step-grandson, Pat Altes.
The family suggests memorials to the Soul’s Harbor Church of God. They may be left at or mailed to the Lindley Funeral Home, PO Box 47, Chillicothe, MO 64601.
