Lena Lea Walker, a 102-year-old resident of Princeton, died on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006 at Pearl’s II Eden for Elders in Princeton. She had been a resident of Pearl’s Residential Care and Pearl’s II Eden for Elders for the past several years.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton. Pastors Guy Olin Thomas and Robin Banion will officiate. Burial will be in the Princeton Cemetery.
Open visitation will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2006 at the funeral home, where a family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Mrs. Walker was born on May 13, 1904 in Mercer County, the daughter of Orley and Ida Lea Ross Woods. She was a 1923 graduate of Princeton High School and taught at the East Pine Rural School for several years.
She was married on June 2, 1923 to Robert Franklin “Frank” Walker, who preceded her in death on March 24, 1994. They lived on a farm southwest of Princeton for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, raising a vegetable garden, having a beautiful flower garden and sharing her knowledge with her granddaughter, Roberta. After many years of farming, the couple moved to Princeton in October 1982.
She was very active in the Pine Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Princeton First Baptist Church, serving many years as a Sunday School teacher; a member of the Magna Charta Dames; a member of the Cornelia Beekman chapter of DAR, where she served as a regent as well as in other offices; a member of the Clara Rebekah Lodge; a former member of the Princeton Cemetery Board of Directors; and a member of the Mercer County Historical Society.
She is survived by one son, Robert Walker and his wife, Freda, of Princeton; a granddaughter, Roberta Zimmer and her husband, Danny of Princeton; two great-grandsons, Jeremy Zimmer and his wife, Samantha, and Drew Zimmer and his wife, Rebecca; five great-granddaughters, Montana, Madison, Myla, Annabel and Audrey; one brother, Sherman Woods of Trenton; and several nieces, nephews and their families.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, DAvid Allen Walker; two sisters, Gertrude Woods and Ethel Cox; and two brothers, Lawrence and Russell Woods.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Princeton First Baptist Church Memorial Fund. They may be left at or mailed to the church at 1308 E. Main St., Princeton, MO 64673.
