Richard Lee Schmitt, a 76-year-old resident of Chula, died on Friday morning, Sept. 29, 2006 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006 at the Slater Funeral Home. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Burial was in the Edinburg IOOF Cemetery at Edinburg.
Mr. Schmitt was born on May 31, 1930 in Trenton, the son of Otto Stephen and Mary Lucille Murphy Schmitt. He attended Princeton schools. He was employed as a truck driver for Marten Trucking before retiring.
He was married on Jan. 2, 1997 at Columbia to Mildred Niccum, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Lee Patrick and Mary Joann Schmitt, both of Salem, OR; one step-daughter, Kay Delameter of Princeton; three sons, Richard Schmitt of Salem and Jeff Schmitt and Kenny Schmitt of Phoenix, AZ; three step-sons, Steve Nigh of Savannah, Kent Nigh of Princeton and Ed Nigh of Colorado; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials are suggested to the Chula First Responders. They may be left at or mailed to the Slater Funeral Home in Trenton.
