Lucy Mae Flanders, 90, of Fort Collins, CO passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at McKee Medical Center Hospice Unit in Loveland, CO.
Lucy was born May 31, 1912 in Trenton, MO to James Grant Benson and Ethel Jennie Lowery. On May 23, 1939, she married Lloyd Leland Flanders in Excelsior Springs, MO.
She attended Trenton High School and graduated in 1934. She also attended college at N.W. Missouri University in Maryville, Missouri and C.U earning her degree in Education.
She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and Ladies Applewood C.C. 18 hole Golf Association. Lucy’s first job teaching school was in Chillicothe, MO for the 1938-39 school year. Starting in 1949 and lasting 29 year, she taught in the Denver Public School District. She was great – one of the best teachers Denver elementary schools ever had. She was a great swim coach and dance teacher. She worked with the U.S.O. from 1942-1949 as a dance and social director. She was a swim instructor for the W.W.C.A. also during 1942-1949. Lucy liked to golf and enjoyed bingo and bridge. She took pleasure in talking with her friends and was very proud of her brothers and sisters. They were her best friends.
Lucy is survived by her daughter, Nancy, and husband, Keith Wear, of Fort Collins, CO; four grandchildren, Melinda and Dave Gualandri, Kristi Wear, Becky Copeland and Brooke Wear; and five great-grandchildren, Brevin Baessler, Derek Baessler and Joey Anderson and Amanda and Ashley Gualandri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lloyd Flanders; son, Ronnie Lloyd Flanders; brothers, James Benson, Billy Benson and Donald Benson; and her sisters, Zelma Meyer and Willa Muller
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Collins, Colorado. Inurnment will take place in Golden Cemetery, Golden CO at 1:30 p.m.
