The North Mercer Cardinals split a pair of HDC contests on Monday night in Mercer. The Lady Cardinals beat the Newtown-Harris Lady Tigers, 5-4, and the Newtown-Harris boys beat Mercer, 10-2.
HDC Teams Split Games On Monday
In the girls contest, Mercer scored a run in the second inning, a run in the third and three runs in the fifth. N-H scored a pair of runs in the first inning and pair of runs in the seventh. The Lady Cardinals made the most of two hits, seven walks and three errors. Toni Brundage and Sari Michaelis each had a single. Brundage also picked up the win. She allowed four runs on five hits and struck out nine batters. She also walked three.
Haley Reed took the loss for Newtown as she allowed five runs on two hits, walked seven and struck out seven. Jessica Huffman had two hits. Jamie Robinson and Shelby Wells each had a single and Katie Mino added a triple and two RBIs.
The Lady Cardinals improve to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the HDC. Newtown-Harris falls to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the HDC. The North Mercer girls play Green City on Monday. Newtown-Harris plays Green City on Thursday.
The Newtown-Harris boys scored six runs in the first two innings and kept the Cardinals at arm’s length for the rest of the game, winning 10-2. The Tigers took advantage of nine walks. K.J. Cool led the way for N-H with four walks, a single, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Justin Ralls had three hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Andy Busick had two hits and three RBIs. Canaan Fairley had two hits and scored two runs. Busick was the winning pitcher. He allowed two runs on three hits. He walked nine and struck out five.
Robert Shriver and Austin Hague each had a triple for North Mercer and Ron Stark added a double. Shriver took the loss. He allowed 10 runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked nine.
The Tigers improve to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the HDC. The Cardinals are 2-6 in the HDC and 3-8 overall. Both teams are in the Boys State Tournament, which begins on Saturday.
