Varsity
Both starting pitchers looked strong in the early going. The two teams were scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Trenton broke through with one run.
Freshman Aubrey Utley worked around three walks and three hits to pitch a seven-inning shutout. Utley turned in another double-digit strikeout performance, mowing down 12 Lathrop batters.
Behind Utley, Trenton’s defense committed only one error and avoided the multiple-error innings.
“I though Aubrey pitched well and I thought our defense played well behind her,” Head Coach Lyle Best said. “We haven’t been making the multiple mistakes. That is key for us.”
The Lady Bulldogs finally broke through with four runs in the sixth inning. Taylor Lynch got THS off to a good start with a leadoff walk. Samantha Fair came in as a pinch runner and promptly stole second base.
“Taylor played well in her second varsity game,” Best said. “Overall, I thought we did a great job running the bases and came up with some big hits.”
Trisha Ireland’s single moved Fair to third. Brittany Lynch singled, which allowed Fair and Ireland to score. B. Lynch then moved to second on a Lathrop error.
Aimee Gutshall got a hit and moved B. Lynch third. B. Lynch took advantage of a passed ball and scored Trenton’s third run of the inning while Gutshall moved up to third base. Emily Anderson game through with an RBI hit.
“We got solid hits with speed on base,” Best said. “That is a good combination and something we have struggled to do a lot this season.”
The Lady Bulldogs continue to pile up the stolen bases – THS nabbed six more on Tuesday night.
Anderson paced Trenton’s offense with a double and a single. Anderson also added a stolen base and an RBI. Ireland had a pair of singles, two stolen bases and she scored two runs.
B. Lynch had a single and two RBIs. She also scored a run. Fair stole a base and scored a run. Gutshall walked, scored a run and stole two bases.
THS improves to 4-5 overall and will play LeBlond on Thursday.
Junior Varsity
The junior varsity tied with Lathrop, 2-2. Tiffany Brewer pitched the first inning and Kylie Russell pitched the second inning.
Tasha Hutchinson and Erika Ebersold both singled and scored a run. Crystal Pash and Taylor Lynch both added two singles.
