The Trenton High School Lady Bulldogs took advantage of a walk, an infield single and a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning as they picked up their first win of the softball season.
Softball Team Wins First Game
The Lady Bulldogs hosted Princeton on Thursday night at Griffin Field in the Ebbe Sports Complex and earned their first win of the 2006 campaign, 3-0.
Both pitchers looked strong in the opening two innings, keeping their opponents from crossing the plate.
Aimee Gutshall worked a seven-pitch walk in the bottom of the third inning and helped set the table for Trisha Ireland. Ireland slapped a slow grounder to the Princeton third baseman Melissa Palmer, but Gutshall was able to beat second baseman Shayla Criddlebaugh to the base. A passed ball by pitcher Ashley Streett allowed both Trenton runners to move up one base.
Two pitches later, a wild pitch allowed Gutshall to score from third and Ireland to score from second.
“Aimee and Trisha scoring on the passed ball was the key play of the game,” Head Coach Lyle Best said. “Samantha Fair scoring on Brittany Lynch’s single in the first was also big.”
Aubrey Utley was the winning pitcher. She struck out 14 batters, walked one batter and surrendered one hit.
“We had great pitching, Aubrey struck out 14 batters, and had two great catches,” Best said. “(JaNea) Whitney was very strong behind the plate.”
Gutshall, Ireland and Fair all scored runs. Lynch had an RBI. Ireland finished the game 1-for-3 and Taby Winters went 1-for-2, stole a base and reached on an error.
The THS junior varsity team also picked up a win on Thursday as they defeated the Lady Tigers, 11-4. The junior varsity is currently 1-0-1.
THS improves to 1-1 overall and Princeton falls to 0-2.
The Lady Bulldogs host Lexington on Monday at Griffin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Tigers see action on Saturday in the Albany Invitational Tournament.
