With only five board members present, the levy was set at $4.59 on the $100 assessed valuation, an increase of 5 cents over a year ago. Of the total, $3.69 will be placed in the general revenue fund while 90 cents will go into debt service to pay for the bonds used to construct the middle school and make renovations at the elementary school. The levy is anticipated to generate around $2,986,378 based on an assessed valuation of $66,511,765.
Two resignations were approved, including high school cook Beth Gross and elementary school custodian Barb Fairchild. The board adopted the financial interest statement policy as required by law as well as the annual Secretary of the Board Report.
Superintendent Becky Albrecht presented board members with information concerning the beginning of the school year, with new staff orientation scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18. In-service workshops for all teachers will be held Monday, Aug 21 and Tuesday, Aug. 22, with classes starting on Wednesday, Aug. 23. A swim party for all staff and their families will be held on Friday, Aug. 18 at the Trenton Aquatic Center.
A schedule of program evaluations was also presented to the board, outlining which programs the board will hear reports on each month. Mrs. Albrecht noted two changes in the schedule from previous years, with the counseling department doing its report in December and the Salary and Welfare committees for both the certified and non-certified staff making their presentations in February.
Board members volunteered to serve on various committees for the coming year. Tracy Utley and Jeff Pash will serve on capital improvements while Pash will also serve on curriculum and Mrs. Utley will serve on salary and welfare. Terry Spillman will serve on the insurance committee, Kevin Bailey on the calendar committee and Steve Holt on the career ladder committee. Martha Roberts and Cass Fuller were not present, but will be asked to serve on committees at a later time.
The board heard a presentation from students who attended the national FCCLA meeting in Nashville, TN in July. Katherine Hoffman, who will be a senior this fall, was elected a national officer and told about some of the things she will be doing this year.
During an executive session at the end of the meeting, the board employed five persons. Bobbie Morgan was hired as a high school cook. Paraprofessoinals hired were Heather Epperson, art/library; Naomi Beth Sibbitt, Title 1; Natalie Nuttall, high school special education; and Lea Ann Boyle, middle school special education.
