The Spickard R-2 Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, accepting bids, approving a salary increase for non-certified staff and approving the 2006-2007 budget.

According to information provided by Principal Danny Johnson, the board approved a bid from Durham Transportation for the amount of $1,280 a month for the lease of a bus. The diesel bid was accepted from MFA at a cost of $2.40 per gallon and Pettijohn Motors of Bethany was awarded a bid for the purchase of a seven-passenger program van at a cost of $15,000.

In other business, board members approved a 5 percent raise for non-certified staff, student and teacher handbooks, the June Core Data report and the Special Education Assurance Statement. The board heard a report from the board secretary about necessary amendments to balance the school books for the 2005-2006 school year. The board voted to approved the amendments to balance the budget. It was noted that there is only $1.14 in unpaid lunch bills at this time.

The 2006-2007 budget was approved. The document shows estimated revenues of $774,144 and anticipated expenditures of $744,447.

In his report, Johnson said the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan is in the process of being completed. The plan will be complete by the end of the summer in time for the next school year. He also updated the board about the district’s participation in the Special Education Cooperative. The board voted to use funds provided from the cooperative to offset salaries of special education staff members. The board is in the process of reading a new board manual, which will be adopted at the August board meeting.

The board voted to hire a part-time secretary for the summer as needed when the secretary and Johnson are both scheduled to be out of the office for extended periods of time.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for July 18.
