County Clerk Meets With Township
Grundy County Clerk Kristi Urich met with the Jefferson Township Board of Trustees Monday evening at Dockery Chapel Church, discussing the possibility of re-opening the polling place in Jefferson Township.
In addition to the township board, members of a committee that was formed last week were in attendance, including members Adrian Cox, Loretta Ray and Jake Graber. Mrs. Urich said the meeting ended with the committee asking if they could donate a touch-screen voting machine to the county and keep the polling place open. Mrs. Urich said this morning she is looking into the legality of such an arrangement.
The Jefferson Township polling place, as well as five others, was closed prior to the April election as part of a consolidation move by Mrs. Urich in response to new federal election laws. The move was part of an effort to save money while meeting federal and state requirements and to ensure that all polling places are handicapped accessible. Jefferson Township voters now vote at the Grundy County Courthouse, rather than at Dockery Chapel Church.
