The third annual Gooseberry Festival will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Trenton with a variety of activities planned in and around the Rock Barn/North Central Missouri Fairgrounds area.

The third annual Gooseberry Festival will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Trenton with a variety of activities planned in and around the Rock Barn/North Central Missouri Fairgrounds area.

A 5K and 10K run/walk will kick off events on Saturday. Registration will be at 7 a.m. at the North Central Missouri Fairgrounds livestock pavilion, with the run/walk to get under way at 7:30 a.m. There is a $10 entry fee, which includes a t-shirt.

Registration for the gooseberry cooking contest is set for 9 a.m. at the Rock Barn, with judging to take place at 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for the winning pie, jam, jelly, etc. Additional information is available by contacting Dr. Nick McHargue at 359-3800.

A farmer’s market will be held in the livestock pavilion throughout the day, beginning at 8 a.m. Free samples of gooseberry pie will be given away.

Various vendors will have their wares for sale at the Rock Barn from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The North Central Missouri Fair and Horse Association is sponsoring this activity and are taking applications for interested flea market and craft fair vendors. Vendors can contact Teri Spickard at 359-4871 or Rosetta Marsh at 359-2726 for more information. Applications are available at the Republican-Times newspaper office or at KTTN radio.

A horseshoe pitching tournament will be held at Eastside Park, beginning at 10 a.m. The tournament will follow a clinic conducted by event coordinator Casey Kitchen, who places second in the junior world horseshoe tournament in Wisconsin. Over 20 girls and boys Pee Wee League teams will be in Trenton for a two-day tournament, which gets under way on Saturday with the preliminaries at Moberly, Griffin and Johnson fields. The finals will be played on Sunday at Johnson and Griffin fields. Dr. McHargue and Gary Berry are coordinating the tournament.

Motorcycle and ATV races are scheduled for Saturday night at the NCM Fairgrounds grandstand. Sign-up will take place prior to the start of the races at 7 p.m. Events will be held in various classes, with an entry fee of $10 per class. Sign-up will be from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages six to 12 and free to children five and under. Pit passes are also available for $10. Also scheduled Saturday night is a boxing tournament in the livestock pavilion at the fairgrounds. The Trenton Boxing Club is hosting the event, which gets under way at 7 p.m. and will feature boxers from Kansas City, St. Louis, Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA and Topeka, KS. There will be an admission charge and concessions will be available.

A trail ride through Poosey Park is being coordinated for Saturday by Ray Ulmer. The Grundy County Museum will also be open on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Proceeds from the festival will go to the park board to assist with various activities.
