There will be “monsterous” fun at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library this summer with the start of the children’s summer reading program.

Events begin on Monday, June 12 and will be held once a week on Monday for seven weeks throughout the months of June and July. The program is for any young adult entering grades five through 12 and is being sponsored by several local businesses. Refreshments and prizes will be given out at each event.

Sign-up day will be June 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. The activity will feature participants using their artistic abilities to turn an ordinary box into a monster .

The June 19 program will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and will include the movie,” Horror Classics,” which is rated PG. Learning about legends in the community will be the theme of the June 26 program from 4 to 5 p.m. and will also include a chance to win a copy of “Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid.”

“Becoming an American” is the theme for the July 3 program, scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. Several books on becoming an American, obtained by the library through a grant, will be reviewed and discussed. The discussion will also include life in America versus life in other countries.

Jason the Juggler will make an appearance on July 10. The program will be from 2 to 3 p.m. This will also be the day that children’s librarian Charity Halstead holds her sign up for “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales,” the summer reading program for age 0 through fourth grade.

There will be a “Fear Factor” challenge on July 17 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Participants will complete in several events.

The final program will be on July 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. There will be a pizza party and prizes for the most books read and the most pages read will also be given.
