Jay Hemenway of Bethany has announced his candidacy for Circuit Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit of Missouri. The Third Judicial Circuit includes Harrison, Putnam, Mercer and Grundy counties.
Hemenway will be seeking election to the office as an independent candidate. Upon certification of his candidacy by the Missouri Secretary of State, Hemenway’s name will be on the Nov. 7 General Election ballot. Jack Peace of Trenton and Tom Keady of Unionville have filed as Republican candidates for the post and will face each other in the primary election in August.
Hemenway graduated from North Mercer High School in 1978, and is a 1983 graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration and a bachelor of arts degree in political science/public administration. He received his juris doctor degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1988.
Hemenway began his law career as an associate with a law firm in southeast Missouri, where he also served as assistant prosecuting attorney. In the early 90’s, he worked with Legal Aid of Western Missouri. He served as Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney for 10 years. In 2003, he established a general law practice in Bethany as a solo practitioner, with a large part of his practice involving criminal, juvenile and family law.
Hemenway is a member of the Third Judicial Circuit Bar Association and Missouri Bar Association, where he is a member of the Criminal Law, Elder Law and the Solo and Small Firm committees.
Hemenway has served as Ma-Has-Kah District chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, president of the Princeton Rotary Club, extension council president and has coached youth basketball. He and his wife, Melody, are members of the First United Methodist Church in Bethany. Together they are the parents of six children, Sara, Chris, Garrett, Allison, Madison and Brendan.
