The Trenton Sesquicentennial Planning Committee met Tuesday night at the Ketcham Community Center and heard progress reports on several activities associated with the celebration of the community’s 150th birthday in 2007.

Gloria Carpenter, co-chairman of the book committee, announced that over 800 two-volume Grundy County History Books have been sold and that approximately 1,500 family histories and 300 military histories have been received. The committee is currently investigating the purchase of additional pages.

Tom Mock reported on the sale of the courthouse art, held last weekend. The Courthouse Art Committee recently sold 109 prints by local artists on roof slates and floor tiles from the Grundy County Courthouse. The slates and tiles were provided by the county commission.

Peggy Robinson, who is coordinating the wild west show, confirmed arrangements with performers for two performances featuring trick and fancy roping, horse catches, a whip artist and tack and Roman riders. Trenton Coca-Cola is the corporate sponsor for the event and raffle tickets for a commemorative saddle, provided by Veach Saddlery, will soon be available for purchase.

Ron Dougan said that the sesquicentennial calendar is a sellout. The 2007 calendar featuring photographs of Trenton businesses will be available for sale at the Missouri Day Festival this fall.

Ed Holt, coordinator for the competitive events, received suggests for children’s contests. The planning committee voted to repeat the Brothers of the Brush and the Sisters of the Swish competition that was featured during the centennial celebration in 1957.

Donnie Wilford, railroad coordinator, confirmed the return of the Union Pacific Challenger steam locomotive and the scheduling of a two-day display and operation of a large model train layout by a Kansas City model train club.

Terri Henderson, co-chairman of the activities and events committee, said the LOCASH Cowboys have been scheduled and will be coordinator with the Grundy County Friends of the Arts as part of their annual arts program. The kickoff banquet will be held on Feb. 27, 2007 and will be sponsored by the city. Among items to be auctioned at that event is a hand-carved walking stick, donated by Mayor Gary Hall.

The planning committee is soliciting designs for a seal and logo until March 15. Entries should be mailed to the Sesquicentennial Committee, PO Box 313, Trenton, MO 64683.

The next committee meeting will be at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 in the Sugg Room of the KCC.
