The Grundy County Friends of the Arts and North Central Missouri College are sponsoring a musical performance on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Wesley United Methodist Church.

“The Lyric Duo,” a husband and wife team, will perform in a 7 p.m. concert at the church as part of the Friends of the Arts 2005-2006 season. The performance is free to Friends of the Arts season ticketholders and NCMC students with proper identification. Tickets sold at the door will be $8.

Eva Peng, a soprano, is the new voice instructor at NCMC and will be performing along with her keyboardist husband Anthony Olson. They will present “George Gershwin and the Classics,” consisting of vocal and solo piano works by Gershwin and other American composers as well as pieces by traditional classical composers.

Ms. Peng and Olson have toured as a duo in the U.S. as well as in central and southern China. Both are active educators, with Ms. Peng teaching voice and music appreciation courses at NCMC and Olson being an assistant professor of piano at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

Ms. Peng was a resident soprano soloist for many years for the Guanghou Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in her native China. In the U.S., she appeared in many recitals and concerts and has starred in numerous productions, most recently in “The Sound of Music” and “Bastien and Bastienna.”

Olson has performed throughout the U.S. and China and has even had live recordings broadcast on National Public Radio. He also judges piano competitions, presents master classes and lectures at professional music conferences. He has directed and conducted numerous operas, including “A Hand of Bridge”, “Blue Monday”, “Bastien and Bastienna” and “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Corporate co-sponsorship for this program is provided by the Trenton Republican-Times, Citizens Bank and Trust, Hy-Vee Food Store, PAR Broadcast Group and Trenton Coca-Cola Bottling Co., LLC. Financial assistance has also been provided by the Missouri Arts Council and through donations from community residents, businesses and organizations.
