The Trenton High School girls basketball team continued to tune up for the district tournament with a 51-36 win over Cameron on Tuesday night. The THS boys, however, ran into a dominate Dragons team that beat the Bulldogs, 63-19.
THS Girls
The Lady Bulldogs were tied with Cameron 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Cameron in the second quarter, 18-6.
Brittany Lynch led the way for Trenton in the second quarter with a pair of three-pointers and eight total points in the period.
“Brittany helped break the game open for us with a pair of three-pointers,” THS Head Coach Kris Ockenfels said. “I also thought Ashten Witten did a great job of holding Cameron’s leading scorer to only four points.”
The Lady Bulldogs outscored Cameron in the second half, 22-19 and improved their record to 13-8. Lynch finished the game with 15 points and Witten added 11 points.
“I really thought our guards did a nice job of making their open shots,” Ockenfels said. “Cameron really packed it in and tried to make Kari Shiflett a non-factor.”
The Lady Bulldogs will play Princeton on Thursday in the Ketcham Community Center. The girls game begins at 6 p.m.
THS Boys
The Trenton boys’ defense helped keep the score respectable during the first quarter, but in the second quarter the Dragons outscored Trenton 24-8 and went into halftime leading, 38-14.
“They are simply a better basketball team,” THS Head Coach Greg Buescher said. “After the game I kept it simple. We need to move on and focus on the next game, which is Princeton on Thursday.”
Cameron’s defense dominated THS in the second half as the Dragons allowed Trenton only five total second-half points. Cameron dropped in 25 points and rolled to an easy victory.
“Cameron is the best small school basketball team I have seen in 16 years of coaching,” Buescher added.
Derek Miller led Trenton with nine points.
The Bulldogs fall to 7-14 and will play Princeton on Thursday night in the KCC. The game will follow the girls’ contest.
