Hearing Addresses Nuisance Issue
The Princeton City Council held a public hearing to discuss a nuisance and awarded a bid for relocation of utilities during a meeting held Monday evening.
City Clerk Keri Stamper said the council held a public hearing concerning property at 602 N. Broadway St. The property owner, Darrell Cain, had requested the hearing after receiving a nuisance letter in the mail directing him to remove vehicles, lawnmowers, etc., from his yard. Cain said he fixes the items for eventual resale, but city council members agreed to abide by their decision that the property must be cleaned up within 30 days.
Council members awarded a bid to Wilson Road Bores of Princeton for relocation of utility lines at the intersection of highways 136 and 65. The bid, which was for $129,500 was the lowest of two received.
In other business, the council entered into an agreement with Onyx to use the Bethany transfer station to drop off waste. Currently, waste is taken to Cincinnati, IA, but that landfill is closing in 2007 due to compliance issues. The council also heard an update on an issue concerning horse manure around the square. The city attorney indicated he has met with the elders of the Amish community, who have agreed to construct a shelter and hitching post and move it one block off the square. The council will discuss the issue at a future meeting.
The council met with Donna Herdrich, representing the Princeton Chamber of Commerce, who indicated there is a push to bring back the trail ride during Calamity Jane Days. Local churches have indicated an interest in being in charge of the event and the council indicated they will discuss it again as the time grows closer. Other summer events planned by the chamber were also discussed.
Dean Larkin, community development specialist with University Extension presented the group’s annual report and said Bruce Gamet’s term on the Extension Board is expiring. The council appointed Debbie Goodknight to fill the vacancy.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, March 6.
