Elijah James “E.J.” Henley, a 78-year-old resident of Ocala, FL, died on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2005 at the Oak Hurst Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Ocala.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at the Mercer Assembly of God Church. His grandson, Aaron Henley, and Pastor Robert Markum will officiate under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Princeton. Burial will be in the Princeton Cemetery.
Mr. Henley was born on Oct. 8, 1927 in Mercer County, the son of Clarence Ray and Leona Marie Rutledge Henley. He was raised in Mercer County and graduated in 1945 from Ravanna High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was married on June 29 1950 at Princeton Hazel Loree Hamilton, who preceded him in death on April 18, 1999. He worked as a farm implement mechanic and owned and operated his own custom combining business for several years. He was later employed by the postal service as a rural mail carrier. After retiring from the postal service, he and his won Roger, ran an auto repair shop in Mercer. He moved to Florida in 1999.
He was a member of the Mercer Assembly of God Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school.
He is survived by one son, Gregory Allen Henley of Morriston, FL; a daughter-in-law, Coral Henley of Kirksvillle; a granddaughter, Stephanie Henley of Columbia; a grandson Aaron Henley of Palm Beach, FL; two brothers, Phillip Henley of Tucson, AZ and Glen Henley and his wife, Ginger, of St. Joseph; five sisters, Mary Jane Shields and her husband, Lester, of Davenport, IA, Ruth Meredith and her husband, Orville, of Davenport, Anita Slattery and her husband, Jim, of Tucson, Lucy Hamilton of Corydon, IA and Marie Johnson and her husband, Ron, of Winona; three sisters-in-law, Helen McReynolds of Princeton, Jeane Henley of Mercer and Opal Henley of Altoona, IA; and several relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Roger Douglas Henley; one granddaughter, Angela Lynn Henley; a step-mother, Rosalee Henley; one sister, Margie McIntosh; two brothers, Forrest and Paul Henley; and an infant brother and sister.
