Funeral services for Ruth Hurst will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 at Wesley United Methodist Church.

A family visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to service time at the church. No visitation is planned at the funeral home. The body will be cremated after the services, under the direction of Whitaker Eads Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hurst, an 83-year-old resident of the Eastview Manor Care Center in Trenton, died at 2:59 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005 at the care center, where she had resided since July 8, 2000.

Mrs. Hurst was born March 8, 1922 at Revere, the daughter of Victor and Gladys Miller Brotherton. She grew up on her family’s farm in Clark County. In her early years she worked in the Kahoka Sale Barn, which was owned by her father. She also taught school in a one-room country school near Kahoka.

She was united in marriage to Oscar G. Watson on July 29, 1943 at Kahoka. He preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1961. On May 27, 1966 she was married to Stanley V. Hurst. He survives of Trenton.

Following her first marriage, Mrs. Hurst moved to Corvallis, OR, where her husband was stationed in the United States Army. She moved back to Kahoka while he was in Germany during World War II. In 1955, the family moved back to Trenton, where she taught school at the Estes School and the Skinner School. She was later a substitute teacher in other Trenton schools.

Mrs. Hurst and her husband were active members of the Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a Welcome Wagon hostess for many years in Trenton and was a supervisor in the northern Missouri region with the Welcome Wagon Corporation. She taught at the Peter Pan School and was in charge of the Meals on Wheels Program. She also volunteered with the Grundy County Historical Society and museum and many other civic and charitable organizations.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hurst is survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Puri of St. Charles and Rhonda J. Lipson of Centennial, CO; two granddaughters, Kiran Puri of St. Charles and Simran Zilaro of San Diego, CA; two grandsons, Daniel and Benjamin Lipson, both of Centennial, CO; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Warren Lee Hurst of Kansas City and Gary Hurst of New Port Richie, FL.

In addition to her first husband and parents, Mrs. Hurst was preceded in death by two infants sisters, Dorothy Louise Brotherton and Virginia Lee Brotherton.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church.
