“Mind Mapping,” a showing of works by artist Teri Willett, will continue the 2005-2006 exhibition schedule in the Dorris Rider Art Gallery at North Central Missouri College.
Ms. Willett is an accomplished artist and art educator in the Kansas City area. The exhibit will primarily feature watercolor paintings and monotypes created as a means of personal growth and therapy. Ms. Willett lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personality disorder) and her artworks are a means of learning about herself and what she refers to as her “inner girls.”
“It has been traveling down a rough road that I have become aware of the inner girls and have grown to love and appreciate them,” Ms. Willett said. “The more I have investigated my inner self, the more my artwork has improved.”
Ms. Willett’s paintings are very colorful and quite detailed. Tiny figures and faces complemented by abstract and plant-like imagery fill her paintings. Often, viewers will stare at her paintings while continuing to find new elements that seem to emerge from the colors and forms.
“I am very excited for Ms. Willett to share her work with NCMC and Trenton,” said Rider Gallery Director Jim Norris. “Her personal story is fascinating and it is very interesting how she incorporates her life into her art.”
Teri Willett’s “Mind Mapping” opens Monday, Nov. 14 and runs through Dec. 9. She will present gallery talks discussing her art on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. in the gallery. She will also conduct a watercolor painting workshop at 1:30 p.m. that day in the Art Building (205 Crowder Road) at NCMC. All NCMC students and members of the public are invited to attend.
“Having attended several of Ms. Willett’s workshops over the years, I can say that her workshops are always very fun, informative and educational,” said Norris. “And to be honest, those who paint in this manner just might learn a little about themselves.”
Regular hours at the Rider Art Gallery are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as selected weekends and evening hours. For more information, persons can contact Norris at 359-3948, ext. 345 at NCMC.
