Park Board Will Seek Bids For Dump Truck
The Trenton Park Board voted to seek bids for a dump truck, discussed work recently completed on the walking trail and heard reports on several on-going projects during a meeting held Wednesday at city hall.
Park Superintendent Jason Shuler presented information on a dump truck that could be purchased by the board for approximately $7,000, however after discussion, board members decided to seek bids for a used dump truck since the projected cost falls under the city’s guidelines for seeking bids. During the discussion, it was noted that the park department borrows dump trucks from other city departments on a regular basis and sometimes one is not available when the park department needs it. Board members agreed that one is needed, but felt it is necessary to seek bids for a truck.
The board also discussed the repairs recently made by Gerald Scott to the walking trail. Scott was awarded the bid to fill cracks in the trail and Shuler said he inspected the work several times, asking Scott to re-do some of the areas. He noted that he thinks the work is completed and said it would have looked nicer if the trail could have been sealed at the same time, but it was sealed last year and unless the board members want to do it themselves, it would likely be cost prohibitive to have it professionally done again this year.
The board discussed the problem of vehicles driving on the walking trail and the board agreed to put ballards up at strategic spots to discourage driving on the trail. One area in particular, the small parking lot on the south side of Burleigh Grimes Field, is of particular concern.
Shuler gave a report on activities taking place in each park, with those items listed as follows:
Van Meter Park – poured two new dugout pads (t-ball will be played there next summer), removed the old concrete shelter pad, poured a new shelter pad and bolted the shelter house down to the new pad. A restroom facility will need to be addressed in the near future, as well as a concession stand. In addition, the roof will be replaced on the shelter house, with a private contractor doing the work.
Eastside Park – two new memorial benches have been placed around the new play structure. Discussion was held on the moving of “tot town” and the possibility of constructing a skate park and a new shelter house in the park.
Moberly Park – the exterior work on the upper Moberly concession stand is complete and items still to be installed include a new breaker box, lights, air conditioner, windows and window covers. The facility will also be painted. It was also noted that two more memorial benches are to be installed at the park.
Shuler also discussed the progress of the hail damaged roofs, noting that park employees have replaced the roofs on the Eastside shelter house, the Bloss Whitney shelter house, the upper Moberly concession stand and the Johnson/Griffin concession stand. Four roofs still need to be replaced including the lower Moberly shelter house, 12th Street restroom facility, Gladys Grimes restroom facility and the Gladys Grimes shelter house. Other items still to be replaced include lights on the ball fields and scoreboards, with the board considering upgrading some scoreboards.
The proposed restroom facility at the Ebbe Sports Complex was discussed, with Duane Helmandollar reporting that he hopes to bring two plans to the next meeting for consideration. One will have a metal exterior while the other will have a split-face exterior and the board can choose which one to pursue. It was noted that the sewer line can be trenched any time and it is hoped the work can be done in the next week or so. The restroom facility would be located on the site where the Bloss Whitney shelter house had been located.
Board President Steve Muff commended the Missouri Day Festival Committee for the success of this year’s event and discussed which areas should be plowed this winter when it snows. Due to the cost of the fuel, he directed Shuler to not plow the road or lots in Moberly Park unless the Kiwanis Shelter House is rented.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7.
