Oscar Wendell Wells, an 88-year-old resident of Mercer, died on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005 at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, IA.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton. Pastor Bill Stanturf will officiated. Burial will be in the Princeton Cemetery.
Open visitation will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005 at the funeral home, where a family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 o’clock that evening.
Mr. Wells was born on July 7, 1917 at Mercer, the son of Raymond Ralph “Ray” and Bessie Mae Early Wells. He was raised in Mercer and graduated in 1935 from Mercer High School. Other than working in Bettendorf, IA for Alcoa for a short time, he farmed and raised black cattle. He left the farm after retirement. He enjoyed raising cattle and playing cards with friends at the Mercer Community Building.
He was married on Aug. 22, 1933 to Mary Alene Ragan, who preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 1987.
He is survived by one daughter, Elaine Stanturf and her husband, Bill, of Trenton; one son, Danny Wells of Ankeny, IA; a daughter-in-law, Linda Wells of Orion, IL; his long-time companion, Liz Bagley, of the home at Mercer; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Wells and Lee Wells and his wife, Linda; two grandchildren, William Harvey Stanturf and Judy Stanturf Mantlo; two brothers, Earl Dean and Billy Jack Wells; and two infant sisters, Gertrude and Dora Marie Wells.
The family suggests memorials to the Mercer High School Alumni Association. They may be left at or mailed to the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel, PO Box 316, Princeton, MO 64673.
