Darrell D. “Steam Hammer” McAtee, a 65-year-old resident of Independence, died on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005 at the Mt. Washington Forever Mausoleum Chapel. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. in the Pilot Grove No. 1 Cemetery at Pilot Grove.

A celebration of life in honor of Mr. McAtee will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005 at the mausoleum.

Mr. McAtee was born on Dec. 2, 1939 in Trenton, the son of Lowell E. and Juanita Newkirk McAtee. He lived in the Independence area. He was a trucker and loved to drive. He was a member of Day Star Ministries. He was a sports fan and enjoyed fishing, watching stock car races and the Kansas City Chiefs.

He is survived by two sons, Randall McAtee and his wife, Cathy, and Raymond McAtee and his wife, Kim, all of Independence; one daughter, Tiffany Brittain and her husband, Tom, of Blue Springs; two step-sons, Curtis and Carl Bennum of Kansas City; one step-daughter, Teresa Nordin and her husband, Rod, of St. Joseph; three sisters, Devona Gilgour of Hamilton and Joyce Tuttle and Connie McCloud, both of Trenton; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepfather; one grandson; and a brother.
