George R. Burgess, a 91-year-old resident of York, NE, died on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005 at York. He was a former Trenton resident.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005 at the Metz Chapel in York. Stanley Morrison will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Unionville Cemetery at Unionville.
General visitation is under way at the mortuary. A family visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2005 at the mortuary.
Mr. Burgess was born on May 30, 1914 in Chillicothe, IA to Vernie Ray and Flora Gaye Moss Burgess. He was married to Wilma VanLoon in November 1932. She died in March 1933 after a brief illness. He was married on Dec. 20, 1934 to Mary Dotson, who preceded him in death in 1989 after 55 years of marriage.
Mr. Burgess farmed, ranched and raised and trained horses in Iowa, Colorado and Missouri. He ranched in the Unionville area for 26 years. He received recognition for his land, cattle and horses. He was active in local and regional organizations, serving as president of the Putnam County Nursing Home, president of the Unionville Cooperative Calf sale, the Township Road Board, president of the Louisa County, IA, Cattle Feeders Association and was a charter member and president of the Circle J Morgan Horse Association in Colorado. He served during World War II in the 177th Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in Alaska.
Mr. Burgess sold the Putnam County ranch in 1990 and moved to Trenton, where he resided until suffering a stroke in 2003. He then moved to York, where he lived in The Mahoney House near his son, Roger. He was diagnosed with colon cancer. in August 2005.
He is survived by one son, Roger Burgess and his wife, Gerry, of York; one daughter, Thelma G. Hennen of Pueblo, CO; seven grandchildren, Pamela and her husband, Eric Hennen Rollison of Davenport, IA, Bradley R. and his wife, Toni Hennen, of Colorado Springs, CO, Kathy E. and her husband, Michael Phoenix I, of San Antonio, TX, Gentry R. and his wife, Elaine Burgess, of Kirkland, WA, Troy D. and his wife, Beth Burgess, also of Kirkland, Brian T. Burgess of Phoenix, AZ, Wade and his wife, Andrea Burgess, of Omaha, NE and Jennifer L. Burgess of Los Angeles, CA; six great-grandchildren, Michael Phoenix II and Mikayla Phoenix, both of San Antonio, TX, Victoria Burgess and Grant Burgess, both of Kirkland, and Micah and Luke Burgess, both of Omaha; and a special friend, Marie Smith of Unionville.
In addition to his parents and wives, Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Lawrence, and two sisters, Irene Meadows and Iva Belle Combs.
