A three-member condemnation commission has determined that property the Grundy County Commission wants to purchase for a new county/city law enforcement center is worth $13,588.

Troy Smith, Terry Dolan and Earl Robinson filed their findings Wednesday morning in Division I of the Grundy County Circuit Court on property at 609 Washington St., owned by Gary and LaJean Hanes.

The property was the subject of an eminent domain hearing held last week in Division I, at which time Judge Andrew Krohn ruled the county had the legal right to condemn the property and appointed the three-member panel to determine the value.

The county had originally offered $1,000 for the property, while Hanes had sought $10,000.

Grundy County Presiding Commissioner Kenny Roberts said the money will be placed in escrow and that each side has 30 days in which to decide whether or not to appeal the finding. Roberts said he expects the county commission to discuss the issue at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 26.

The county commission recently agreed to pay Jim McCarty $148,688 for the former Nisbeth-Seidel building and property, which was the value placed on the property by another condemnation commission earlier this month. The county has already purchased two other properties, which were not part of either condemnation procedure, and are also attempting to buy a third in that area. All the property is located just west of the Grundy County Courthouse.
