The Trenton Police Department is warning residents of a sweepstakes scam that has been reported in Trenton.
According to Det. Jerry Smith, a resident received a letter informing him he had won $25,000 in a sweepstakes. He was sent a money order from the sweepstakes company for $4,850 and was told that he was to deposit those funds and then would be told where to send an identical amount to pay for the ?taxes and fees? involved. Suspecting a scam, the subject reported this to the bank, which learned that the money order had already been paid a year ago. Had the man written a check for the ?taxes and fees? and sent it to the company, he would have lost that amount of money.
Smith said anyone receiving such an offer should use extreme caution and should never send any money or reveal any personal financial information.
