The Trenton Board of Public Works, which oversees the operation of Trenton Municipal Utilities, held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening at Trenton City Hall.

The board passed a resolution commending utility employees for receiving the American Public Power Association’s 2004 Electric Utility Safety Award for safe operating practices. TMU earned a first-place award in the category for utilities with 15,000 to 29,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure. The award was presented on April 18 during the association’s annual Engineering and Operations Technical Conference held in Memphis, TN. More than 200 utilities entered the annual contest.

“We’re pleased to be recognized with this national award,” TMU Director Chad Davis said. “TMU is proud of its safety record and will continue to provide safe and reliable electric service to the community.”

In other business, the board approved the purchase of a bucket truck from Drake-Skuggs for $51,250. It will replace the smaller of two bucket trucks the utility owns, which is 10 years old and required $4,000 to $5,000 in repairs last year. It was the lowest of four bids received.

The board also approved a contract with Larkin Group to develop a risk management plan for chlorine stored at the water treatment plant. The Environmental Protection Agency now requires agencies storing more than 2,500 pounds of chlorine to have a risk management plan in place. TMU staff was instructed to negotiate with Larkin on the amount of work to be done, including an ongoing safety program in addition to the risk management plan.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for May 17.
