Two sophomore students at North Central Missouri College have put their community college on the map by earning scholastic recognition as distinguished members of the 2005 All-Missouri Academic Team.
Natosha Snidow of Galt and Denise Tounzen of Brookfield were named to the first team All-Missouri team and college officials indicate this is a first for NCMC and for most two-year community colleges to have two individuals named to the first team in the same year. Miss Snidow and Mrs. Tounzen were honored last week in special ceremonies in Jefferson City along with eight other scholars from throughout Missouri selected to the first team. As a part of their recognition, each honoree was presented with a medallion, a certificate signed by Gov. Matt Blunt and a $500 scholarship.
Members to the second and third team were also recognized at that time.In addition, Miss Snidow was named the New Century Scholar in recognition for being named the top student in the entire state. As a part of that special designation, Miss Snidow was invited to make both personal remarks and an acceptance speech on behalf of each of the state?s honorees. One student was selected from each state by a national panel of education leaders based on scholarship performance, community service and leadership and each state winner was awarded a $2,000 scholarship.
Miss Snidow was honored in Boston, MA this past weekend at the American Association of Community Colleges annual convention. where each state honoree was formally presented as a 2005 New Century Scholar and accepted a national medallion and their national scholarship. The national program is jointly sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and the Community College Association and is underwritten by the Coca-Cola Foundation and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
In addition to the selection as Missouri?s top scholar, Miss Snidow was selected third team of the All-USA Team.
Miss Snidow is the first NCMC student to earn the top ranking in the state in the history of the program, dating back to 1994. College President Dr. Neil Nuttall, who attended both the state and national events, expressed pride on behalf of the local college and the region with the selection of these two outstanding students from the local campus.
Miss Snidow plans to transfer to the University of Missouri-Kansas City to major in graphic design following graduation from NCMC while Mrs. Tounzen plans to attend Graceland University with a major in elementary education.
