Mr. Barnett was born on July 12, 1924 at Dunlap, the son of C.C. “Pete” and Paula Eschenheimer Barnett. He was raised in the Dunlap and Galt communities and graduated in 1942 from Galt High School. Mr. Barnett served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946, assigned to the 36th Division, Quartermaster in Germany and France. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Galt, where he was married on Aug. 31, 1947 in Trenton to Jean Huffine, who survives of the home. With the exception of five years spent living at Gilman City and Savannah, the couple lived and farmed all their working lives in the Galt community. They owned and operated the Barnett Grocery Store at Galt, starting in 1957, and opened the Barnett Hardware Store in 1963. Mr. Barnett also sold insurance for MFA and later Shield of Shelter for many years. They retired and moved to Trenton to make their home in March 1998.
Mr. Barnett was a member of the Galt Christian Church, a charter member and first president of the Galt Lions Club, a charter member of the Galt Fire Department, a 50-year member of the Trenton Lodge No. 111, AF&AM and a member of the Major Dale Stepp American Legion Post No. 31 at Trenton.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Dr. Jim Barnett and his wife, Dodi, of Pensacola, FL; a daughter, Sharon Bean and her husband, Dr. David, of Edwardsville, IL; a sister, Shirley Barbour and her husband, Dr. Gene, of Chesterfield; four grandchildren, Kari Barnett, Lisa Carrillo, Jay Barnett and Jeremy Jackson; and seven great-grandchildren.
