The Grundy R-5 Board of Education awarded a bus contract, approved a change in graduation credits for vocational-technical students and offered contracts to employees during a meeting held Monday.

According to Superintendent Harry Wheeler, the board approved a contract with Hill Transportation Company, the same company the district has contracted with for the past several years. A second bid was received from Durham Bus Company, with Wheeler noting that the proposals were very similar.

The board approved a change in the graduation requirements for students who attend vocational-technical school in Chillicothe. The current requirements for all students is 28 credits and Guidance Counselor Robin Brown said the vo-tech students lose class time due to traveling to and from Chillicothe. This makes it difficult for those students to earn the required 28 credits. On her recommendation, the board approved a change making the requirement for students who attend vo-tech for their junior and senior years 26 credits, beginning with the 2005-2006 school year.

In other business, the board learned that the district received a $1,400 grant from the Grundy Electric Cooperative?s Community Foundation and approved a copier lease from IKON that will provide new copiers and save the district approximately $500 per year over what has been spent for the past several years. A discussion was held concerning the proposed Foundation Formula which, if approved, would result in the district receiving no new money from the state.

Elementary Principal Lisa Fairley updated the board on several upcoming events, including sixth grade graduation, which is set for 6:30 p.m. May 12; the elementary music program, set for 6:30 p.m. May 5; and an all-elementary school field trip to Science City on April 1.

High School Principal Kirk Cohagan said a bus evacuation drill was held March 2 and the national tornado drill was held March 15.

An executive session was held, after which the board voted to offer contracts to all current certified staff members. Salaries will be determined at a later date.

The board plans to hold a special meeting at 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 11 to reorganize following the April 5 election. The next regular meeting will be held on April 18.
