The man accused in connection with an armed robbery Monday at the Trenton Hy-Vee Food Store was captured later that morning near Cameron after a brief stand-off with law enforcement officers.
According to information provided by the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Trenton Police Department, 40-year-old Scott Schwartz of Chillicothe has been charged in Grundy County with pharmacy robbery in the first degree and armed criminal action, with bond set at $100,000 cash only. He is also charged in Daviess County with first degree robbery and armed criminal action in connection with a robbery at the Pit Stop in Winston. Bond on that charge is set at $85,000 cash-only. He is being held in the Grundy County Jail and is expected to appear in court on March 22.
Schwartz?s troubles began around 9:30 a.m. Monday when he walked in the Trenton Hy-Vee store, going to the pharmacy, where he robbed the clerk of a quantity of narcotics. During his getaway, an employee wrote down the license plate number of a 2000 Ford Explorer as the suspect drove from the scene.
At 10:19 a.m., a subject that matched the description of the Hy-Vee robber robbed the Pit Stop in Winston. Members of the Highway Patrol Troop H were working a traffic operation on the adjacent Interstate-35 near Cameron. The Troop H aircraft flew to the area of US 69, north of Cameron, and observed a vehicle matching the description of the Explorer heading to Cameron. A Cameron police officer met the vehicle just north of the city and reported it to a Troop H member who successfully deployed a set of spike strips. Two more spike strips were successfully deployed as the Cameron Police Department chased the vehicle into the city of Cameron. The suspect turned west on US 36 and drove into the median and stopped. He stepped out of the Explorer and held a gun, later reported to be a BB gun, to his own head. A three-minute standoff developed before a Cameron officer shot the suspect with a less than lethal beanbag round to the stomach. Schwartz fell to the ground and was arrested without further incident.
Schwartz was transported from the scene by ambulance and was taken to the Cameron Regional Medical Center for treatment of a broken arm that occurred during his arrest.
