Some Trenton residents were left in the dark for several hours on Friday after a communication wire in a transformer failed inside the Trenton Municipal Utilities power plant, knocking out electricity to all 3,000 customers.

According to Trenton Utility Director Chad Davis, the failure occurred at about 11:15 a.m., at the substation where the power is received from Northwest Electric Cooperative. The failure caused the entire system to shut down for a while, Davis said. Some electric customers regained power at approximately noon, while others were left with electricity until nearly 2:30 p.m. Davis said the substation where the power comes in was the last to regain its electricity. Davis indicated that customers who are served by the north and south substations had power sooner than the others.

Davis said that staff from NEC was on hand Friday to help diagnose the problem and that TMU employees were working today to replace the wiring that caused the incident and take care of some other issues that were brought to light during the incident, such as making sure the generators in place are reliable.

In addition to the incident on Friday, some customers lost their electricity for a few minutes in the early morning hours of Saturday when another ?blip? occurred. Davis said that exact cause of that incident is still being diagnosed.

Several areas businesses, as well as Trenton R-9 Schools, were affected by the power outage on Friday. The Grundy County Courthouse closed early and the Trenton Republican-Times took on a slightly different look after being printed at the office of the Gallatin North Missourian.
