Veva Nell “Polly”Heck, a 92-year-old former Chillicothe teacher, died at 6:39 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005 at Saint Luke’s North Hospital in Kansas City.
Arrangements are pending at the Resthaven Mortuary, north of Trenton.
Mrs. Heck was born on Aug. 26, 1912 on a farm in Mercer County, the daughter of Chester and Edith Ham Lyon. She graduated from Newtown High School and received a degree in education in 1941 from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville. She taught in rural schools in Mercer and Sullivan counties until she moved to Chillicothe in 1942. She taught mainly second grade at the old Field School and the Dewey School in Chillicothe before retiring in 1979. After retiring she did private tutoring and substitute teaching.
She was married on Jan. 1, 1950 at Trenton to Milburn Heck, who preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2001. They lived all their married lives in Chillicothe. After the death of her husband, she moved to Kansas City to be near her son.
She was a member of the First Christian Church at Chillicothe. She was an avid antique collector and loved animals.
She is survived by an adopted son, Allen Heck and his wife, Rosa; and three grandchildren, Skylar Alexander, Marcus Andrew and Heather Breanna Heck.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Maude Cochran; and a brother, James. S. Lyon.
