HDC Tournament Concludes

The HDC Tournament wrapped up on Saturday night in Galt. The Gilman City girls upset the North Mercer girls in the championship game, 51-43. The Ridgeway boys defeated Winston in the championship game, 57-44.

The HDC Tournament wrapped up on Saturday night in Galt. The Gilman City girls upset the North Mercer girls in the championship game, 51-43. The Ridgeway boys defeated Winston in the championship game, 57-44.

In the third-place games, the Newtown-Harris girls defeated North Daviess, 64-54, and the Gilman City boys beat North Mercer, 52-49. The Pattonsburg girls defeated Tri-County in the consolation championship, 43-39. The North Harrison boys beat Grundy R-5 for fifth place, 51-44 and the Grundy R-5 girls earned ninth place by beating Winston, 54-30.

Gilman City Girls

The Gilman City girls played two games over the weekend in the HDC Tournament. The Lady Hawks downed North Daviess in Friday night’s semifinal matchup, 53-39.

The Lady Hawks outscored North Daviess 16-9 in the first quarter and led at halftime, 29-16. The Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Knights in the second half, 24-21.

Monica Wilson led Gilman City with 15 points. Kayla Payne had 12 points and Whitney Houser added 10 points.

Gilman City picked up the tournament title with a win over North Mercer. Gilman City outscored North Mercer in the first quarter, 9-8. The Lady Cardinals came back to take a halftime lead, 27-21. The Lady Hawks then outscored North Mercer 24-16 in the final two periods to seal the win.

Payne led Gilman City with 18 points. Wilson had 13 points and Houser added 12 points.

North Mercer was led by Hillary Martin with 15 points and Danielle Michaelis had 13 points. Toni Brundage added 10 points for the Lady Cardinals.

The Lady Hawks improved to 14-6 and will be at North Mercer on Tuesday.

Gilman City Boys

The Gilman City boys lost to Winston in the semifinals on Friday, 73-60. The Red Birds led Gilman City by eight points at the end of the first quarter, while Winston led at the half, 33-18. Gilman City outscored Winston 42-40 in the second half but, still lost by 13 points.

Kaleb Wilson led Gilman City with 25 points and five steals. Heath Oram had 11 points and four assists. Daniel Williams led Winston with 19 points and Cody Lang added 15 points.

The Gilman City boys won third place on Saturday night by beating North Mercer by three points. Gilman City led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and then stretched the lead to 10 points at halftime, 25-15.

North Mercer cut the lead to two points after three quarters, 41-39.

Benjamin Herrold led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Wilson had 15 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Oram added six points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Gilman City boys have a record of 10-9.

The Gilman City boys will be at North Mercer on Tuesday.

Grundy R-5 Boys

The North Harrison boys led at the end of the first quarter of the fifth-place game, 10-8. The Panthers led at halftime, 20-16.

The Shamrocks outscored Grundy R-5, 21-14, in the third quarter. North Harrison added four points to the lead in the fourth quarter.

Logan Jackson led Grundy R-5 with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kyle Larson had 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Alex Peterson had eight points, nine rebounds and four steals. Colby Searcy had eight points and five rebounds. Clint Wilson finished with six points and six rebounds.

Nathan Lisle and Kasey Parkhust led North Harrison with 16 points each. The Panthers fall to 11-9 overall and will host Tri-County on Tuesday in Galt.

Grundy R-5 Girls

The Grundy R-5 girls won the ninth-place game Saturday morning over Winston. The Lady Panthers outscored Winston, 22-9, in the first quarter and never looked back. The Grundy R-5 girls outscored Winston in the second quarter, 11-4, then outscored Winston in the second half, 21-20.

Kendall Nienhuser led Grundy R-5 with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Lacey Tolle had 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Beth Callihan had 10 points and four assists. Kayla Smith had seven rebounds and three steals and Jenna Wynne has six rebounds and three assists.

The Lady Panthers improved to 3-17 overall and will host Tri-County on Tuesday.

Newtown-Harris Girls

The North Mercer girls got off to a quick start during their semifinal game with Newtown-Harris on Friday night. The Lady Cardinals outscored Newtown-Harris, 13-2, in the first quarter.

The Lady Tigers answered with a 12-3 run to end the second quarter and at halftime trailed, 20-16. North Mercer regained control of the game in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Tigers, 12-4. North Mercer finished the game with a 13-12 run and took a 45-32 win.

Melanie Barnes led Newtown-Harris with 18 points and Megan Barnes added seven points. Martin led Mercer with 21 points and Brundage added 11 points.

Newtown Harris beat North Daviess in the girls third-place game. The Lady Tigers led by one point after the first quarter, 14-13, and North Daviess led at the half, 24-23.

The Lady Tigers doubled their score in the third quarter and led heading into the fourth quarter, 46-33. North Daviess outscored Newtown-Harris by three points.

Melanie Barnes led the Lady Tigers with 25 points.

Melissa Young and Carah Carr both scored 18 points for North Daviess Sarah Carr added 14 points.

The Newtown-Harris girls will be at North Daviess on Friday, Feb. 18.
