Members of the Trenton Park Board accepted a donation to be used toward developing a skate park, discussed the hiring of a pool manager and formed a budget committee during its meeting held Wednesday evening at city hall.
Colin Withers, on behalf of the Trenton Kiwanis Club, presented a check for $500 to the board. The funds are to be earmarked to help construct a skate park. Withers said the Kiwanis Club would like to see action on the park within the next two years and if there is no progress by that time, they would ask for the funds to be returned. Park Superintendent Jason Shuler said the city is still in the running for a grant to help construct a skate park, a project that local businessman Robert Williams has been involved with in recent months.
On the recommendation of the pool committee, the board gave Shuler the authority to hire the pool manager and assistant managers for the 2005 season. Duane Helmandollar, a member of the pool committee, said he would like to see Shuler take on the task of hiring the managers since he is the one who has direct supervision of the pool staff. There was discussion concerning the possibility of hiring two managers or maybe one manager and three assistant managers in order to ensure that enough management staff is on hand without having to pay the management overtime. Shuler will talk with last year?s management staff about returning and will report back to the pool committee.
Helmandollar also said the committee is looking at admission prices for the season, as well as the prices for pool parties. The board agreed to host a free swim for the World Changers on July 13, although it was noted that this is a very special circumstance and free parties are not going to be given away very often.
Shuler said he has been working on the 2005 budget and the board formed a budget committee, consisting of Chuck Lankheit, Helmandollar, Shuler, Marti Williams and Steve Muff. The committee plans to schedule a meeting next week and board members noted that getting a start on the renovation of Van Meter Park will be a priority for the year, as will finishing up items that are not yet completed from the current year. Work will also continue on plans to construct restroom facilities at the Ebbe Sports Complex.
Shuler said the street department is planning to use waste asphalt to fix a portion of the walking track where the ground is washing away and noted that work on the extension to the track will begin this spring. Work is also scheduled to begin on the second new shelter house at Moberly Park and volunteers are needed to help with the project. Shuler said the work should begin around 1 p.m. on Friday and anyone who would like to help is asked to meet at the site, which is near the tennis courts.
In other business, the board agreed to seek bids for a new four-wheeler and discussed landscaping to be done by the Master Gardeners in the park system.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednes-day, March 2.
