The Trenton R-9 School District, in cooperation with the Grundy County Health Department and Dr. Alissa Henson, will be conducting a scoliosis screening program Feb. 10 to detect children with a curvature of the spine.

According to available information, seven to 10 children in every 100 may develop scoliosis and one to three will require treatment. If detected early and treated appropriately, progressive spinal deformity can be prevented.

The procedure for screening involves the screener looking at the child?s back in a standing position and in the forward bending position. This will be done for boys and girls in grades six, seven and eight. If a child is found to have a suspected curvature, parents will be notified by letter and asked to take the child to a physician for further evaluation.
