The Grundy R-5 Board of Education met in regular session Monday night, scheduling makeup days, discussing liability limits and approving health screenings for staff.

According Superintendent Harry Wheeler, the board approved the following days as makeup days, in addition to Monday, which was to have been a school holiday: April 18 and May 13, 16, 17 and 18. Wheeler said the board commended parents who have been bringing their children to the hard-surface roads during inclement weather. Also approved were makeup dates for basketball games, including Jan. 20, in which the Lady Panthers will take on North Daviess, and Jan. 27, in which the boys and girls will play Green City.

Elementary basketball games were discussed, with the R-5 Tournament scheduled for March 7, 8 and 10 and the fifth and sixth grade scheduled to play in the Newtown Tournament March 15, 17 and 18.

Several other announcements were made, including that the county spelling bee will be held Feb. 15 at 4:30 p.m. at Pleasant View R-6 School and that classes will not be in session Feb. 2 for a teacher work day. R-5 will host the HDC Basketball Tournament Feb. 5-12 and homecoming activities will take place Feb. 18 with a game against Pattonsburg. It was also announced that Amy Axtell, a business instructor at the school, has been named to the Statewide A-Plus Advisory Board.

In other business, the board decided that its current liability limit of $2,250,000 is sufficient and agreed to seek additional bids for the school audit. One has already been received from the current auditor, Davis, Lynn and Moots of Springfield, but others will be sought.

Board candidate filings were discussed, with four candidates filing so far for the four positions. Mike Herrold has filed for the two-year unexpired term, while Dennis McDonald, Allen Berry and Damon Neff have filed for the three three-year terms. Herrold, McDonald and Berry are currently serving on the board. Board members were reminded to turn in their financial disclosure forms.

The board discussed health screenings for staff and agreed to allow the Grundy County Health Department to conduct the screenings. The district will not pay for the screenings, but they are offered at a greatly reduced price and in some instances will be covered by insurance.

An executive session was held, with no announcement made.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 21.
