Opal Amelia DeWitt, an 84-year-old former Liberty resident, died on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005 at the Beverly Health Care in Smithville after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was a former Trenton resident.

Opal Amelia DeWitt, an 84-year-old former Liberty resident, died today (Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005) at the Beverly Health Care in Smithville after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was a former Trenton resident.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date in Trenton.
Mrs. DeWitt was born on Jan. 9, 1921 in Trenton, the daughter of William S. and Josephine Boyd Daniels. She graduated from Trenton High School and Trenton Junior College and received a bachelors degree in education from the University of Missouri. She was married in 1947 to Robert Lee DeWitt, who preceded her in death in 1993. She taught elementary school for 34 years in the Trenton, Greenfield and Liberty school districts before retiring and moving with her husband to the Springfield/Billings area. She enjoyed music and playing the organ.
She is survived by a sister, Mildred Barnes of Trenton; two grandchildren, Jackie Strickland of Excelsior Springs and James Teegarden II of St. Joseph; and three great-grandchildren, Brody, Colbyn and Dawson Strickland.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Teegarden; and seven brothers and sisters.
The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons White Chapel in Gladstone.
